An Introduction to Akshaya Patra
Over the past two decades, India has achieved remarkable economic growth that has made it the 3rd largest economy in the world. Yet for many, the benefits of India’s new prosperity are still far from reach.
70% of Indian families struggle to survive on an income of just $2.00 per day, and almost 33% of Indian families subsist on less than $1.25 a day. Amongst these families are millions of children.
Over 61 million, or one-third, of the world’s malnourished children live in India. India has the highest number of child laborers in the world with 60 million children out of school.
The Akshaya Patra Solution
At Akshaya Patra we believe that the solution to these overwhelming challenges can be found in the simplest of catalysts: a hot, nutritious meal and our innovative school meal program is breaking the cycle of poverty for the families of over one million children.
The Sanskrit words “Akshaya Patra” mean an “inexhaustible vessel of food”, and they reflect the mission of our organization to provide unlimited food to government school students.
Akshaya Patra, a public-private partnership, delivers school lunches at a fraction of the cost of similar programs in other parts of the world. The hallmark of the Akshaya Patra program are the centralized kitchen facilities that have been designed and engineered from scratch by its founders to optimize quality and minimize cost, time, labor.
With built-in efficiencies and use of innovative technology, the cost per meal is only $0.13. The Indian Government provides grain and a cash subsidy of $0.07. Akshaya Patra raises the remaining $0.06 from its donors and supporters.
For every $15 donated, Akshaya Patra will provide nutritious school meals to one child for an entire academic year.
