Akshaya Patra Hunger Relief and Beneficiaries

COVID-19 Hunger Relief Update

Whenever there is a natural disaster or crisis, Akshaya Patra has been a first responder working in tandem with partners, donors, and volunteers to provide aid and hunger relief to those impacted communities.  This was the case when the COVID-19 pandemic impacted India.

COVID-19 Hunger Relief Efforts

In March of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a nationwide lockdown and school closures throughout India. As a result, migrant laborers, daily wage workers, and the economically disadvantaged were significantly impacted by the pandemic.

Thanks to Akshaya Patra’s network of kitchens, delivery vehicles, and partnerships with the state and central government, Food Relief Efforts immediately went underway. These efforts were delivered in the form of freshly cooked meals and dry rations.

Dry rations and groceries are being delivered to 32 locations throughout India. Each kit is equal to 42/28 meals depending on the location served and availability of the ingredients. The kit contains an array of non-perishable foods like rice, dal (lentils), wheat or millet flour, fortified salt, sugar, and spices.  The cooked meals are being served at 28 locations and consist of rice and dal, khichadi/roti, and subji.

Happiness Kits

In August 2020, Akshaya Patra expanded its Food Relief Efforts by creating Happiness Kits for its children beneficiaries, who lost access to the mid-day meal program. Happiness Kits are being distributed to 31 locations throughout India.

Every Happiness Kit contains 20 days’ worth of dry rations, educational supplies, an activity book (regional language), hygiene, and a sanitary pack. For only $8.50, each kit can feed a child for 20 days, as little as $0.27 per meal.
